When I was your age...

Do you remember your grandparents complaining about how things change? "When we were your age, we had rotary dial phones. They were easy to use and reliable. Today....". You get the picture.

This is my very first blog and I decided to move some of my funny stories that I share with friends into this newfangled format. I never understood why people have to share their opinions (or their life story) for all to hear - but I find myself doing just that.

The story attached to this picture is a good example of how we may kick and scream about new technology yet find ourselves embracing the very thing we complain most about.
This is a picture of Craig Newmark (left), creator of Craig's List, and me (right). Craig's List is a giant classified web page - you can buy, sell, or find just about anything.

Well, my wife absolutely hates the computer and can't understand how anyone can waste their life away on the internet. She avoided using the computer for years (still does not know how to turn it on). Her boss decides to give her a computer of her very own and I set it up for her and teach her how to access the Internet and how to retrieve her email. In less than a week she finds Craig's List and life has not been the same since.

I got a chance to meet Craig at an awards ceremony (our Nokia software tool won a "Jolt Award" and Craig was a presenter) and I told Craig that I was mad at him. I explained that my tech-hating wife is now on the computer several times a day - buying or selling stuff and he is to blame. He looks at me and says in a soft voice, "tell her - Thank You".

Now it is my turn. I'm a grandfather and have started my first blog. What will I tell my granddaughter when she gets older? "When I was your age, we had to edit our blogs by hand - we did not have some newfangled GUI tool that did the formatting"
